Has anyone else heard that Transworld is closing something like 70% of its stores by mid-February of next year? Heard this on Friday and thought it didn't sound realistic....

Store closings in Feb? Not surprising.
70%? Unlikely.

70% is not a real number. TWE does review store performance constantly and will not renew leases on the the poorer performing stores. However the number of closings is often held very close to the vest.

With the recent announcement to go private and the objection that followed, this is going to be an interesting year for Transworld.

I'd love to see the personlaity test they give to people applying for jobs in HR in this climate.

Houses in Albany / Troy aren't that expensive, Joe can go work at the Pepsi plant...probably pays better.

I've been witness to and experienced such things myself, usually HR just determines the head count that has to go and the direct superior has the lovely job of making the decision. More than once it was while knowing someone had just bought a house, just had a child, had other major life issues going on, or was under the false perception that they were not expendable. It sucks, no matter what.

Cute joke, but obviously most of Transworld's stores are not in Albany.

I've been assuming they'd close the strip mall stores (like the ones near me in Freeport/Oceanside/Elmont, Long Island, NY) and stick with the Malls. 30% leaving 70% seems more like the number.

I was sad to hear that Metal Mecca Slipped Disc in Valley Stream is planning on calling it quits. I was bike riding there as a kid in the 80's, coming back with some great import punk & new wave vinyl under my arm. Usually, when a competitor goes out, it's good news, but their business was largely everything metal-related, so their customer core would scoff at the "regular" indie store. Apparently, even metal is losing it's "in-store" appeal. I wish Mike well.

You think store staff buying houses on TWEC pay? No way. And no way they hear from HR, that's strictly headquarters only. The stores are closed by a truck and upper mgt showing up to say "this location is being closed today". They don't trust the staff to not steal the store blind if they get advance word on closings and job loss.
