The money quote:

"There's no one in the record industry that's a technologist," Morris explains. "That's a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn't. They just didn't know what to do. It's like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?"

Personally, I would hire a vet. But to Morris, even that wasn't an option. "We didn't know who to hire," he says, becoming more agitated. "I wouldn't be able to recognize a good technology person anyone with a good bullshit story would have gotten past me."

My fave quote:

In a way, he almost comes off as cute, like if your grandfather were accidentally hired to run Google (at one point, Morris hilariously compares his embattled industry to a character in "Li'l Abner," a comic strip that stopped running in 1977).

Great article - and loved "Universal Music Group to Challenge iTunes With Inferior Online Store Four Years Too Late."

In the real world, wouldn't this geezer have been given the Golden Parachute years ago?

Honestly the headline of the entry speaks volumes.

Isn't it about time for Popeye to jump in and laud Doug for his brilliant business acumen and valiant Apple-fighting?

To be fair, eight years later, and no one else has figured it out either - for why hasn't an established (or startup) Internet player eaten the major's lunch already with a new record company model? Maybe because there is no way to successfully compete with free.

gee, that's funny...

last I checked, universal, and doug morris, had been getting plenty of salient outside advice from one of the best digimedia minds in the business

maybe what the quote should say is, 'we heard the doctor, but didn't want to take our medicine just yet...'

Surely it wouldn't have taken someone at Universal more than a month or two to learn enough about the Internet to know who to call to answer a few questions.

Yeah, all they had to do is read my posts here back in 2000, take the free advice being copiously offered and save their miserable stupid arses. But, they didn't and look what it got them. Perhaps the tar was too warm to pass up laying down in.
