He sounds so cliche, it's not even funny.

Yeah, I told ya... he sounds very cliche, and doesnt really have anything of substance to say. There is also an interview on the site with Terry McBride, who sounds much more enthusiastic about what he's doing. I recommend watching it as well!

it gets weird around 4:30, when he's talking about the lack of filters for the consumer to guide them/help them choose from the massive amount of music out there, etc., anyway at one point he's fumbling for words and says "the right..sort of...susscription...for lack of a better word..."

like he's thinking "subscription" but maybe meant to say "prescription" or even "recipe"....seems like a freudian slip, cause he's really talking about the music shopping environment and educating the public, i.e., by telling them what they want.

was I the only one who watched this and thought "he's kinda fried, isn't he?"

I'll watch it in total a bit later on...but in the first couple minutes he bemoans the fact that on alternative rock radio, "all the guitars sound exactly the same"...and then goes on to say, "people think this is the labels' fault...it has nothing to do with the labels...it's a lack of imagination". HUH? This has NOTHING to do with the labels? What about the LABELS' lack of imagination for signing endless bands that all sound exactly the same? THAT is the problem there...

could barely spit out, "the labels do put up a lot of money for touring . . . and . . and . . . and . . . and . . . development"

the rest? painful

Labels can't choose which bands to sign. They pretty much have to sign whatever bands are available, right?

Uh, well, are you being serious?

Why on earth sign a band that sounds EXACTLY like some other band unless your immediate goal is to try to guarantee success. I mean, I surely understand going for what is tried and true (wouldn't be my strategy, but at least I understand the concept), but if that's your strategy, WHY COMPLAIN ABOUT IT LATER?

Or are you saying that in ALL OF AMERICA, there are NO bands which don't follow the current AOR formula?

Sorry, I don't believe it for a second.

my last a&r gig, by each week's end I'd have over a hundred cd's from every genre and gamut of popular music. 'whatever bands are available' was a pretty big pool, and I'd wager it still is.

watching iovine, I kept thinking of stan lynch's comment to him in the petty doco: "dude... there's a glass wall, you're supposed to be on the other side of it."

Well put.

If they canned most of the top music biz decision makers and replaced them with people grabbed randomly off the sidewalk, the resulting music would probably be vastly better than the dreck they're pushing now.

I bet it was disappointing...at least for those in the know, I would assume,,,to not hear him directly address his plan...it still seemed like veiled comments re: "corporations won't stand for it" re: illegal downloads--for holding ISP's responsible??-- to the plan for "Services" that incorporate on line live usage retrieval only??, i.e. no hard drive/storage system??

Outside of that..he cleverly summarized the past 3 years of discussions on this board re: lame "musicianship" lack of "Uniqueness" and cultural death of "Imagination"

he summed it up best by labeling the responsibility of the artist/record co to "move along/impress upon popular culture"...a heavy responsibility indeed when all are stuck in a quagmire cesspool of sorts of rehashing what is and what should never be

We've come to watch Caesar bury himself, not to praise him.

If Iovine truly has governance over operations and long range planning, it's no wonder why the label is in the shape it's in. This guy is an industry thought leader? If I were and investor and saw that interview, I would sell my shares.

Exactly!!!

...That's why his use of the words "Uniqueness" "Imagination" and the responsibility to culture here are so RELEVANT....the apparent, by way of results, deaf calling the deaf,,,uhh,,so to speak

Online magazine with Gwen Stefani? YAWWWWNNNNN.

Nightclubs with Pussycat Dolls? YYYYYYYYAAAAAAWWWWWWWNNNNNNNN.

U2 iPod? "Oh yeah, we had a hand in that". ("...that is, before we decided that we needed to try to cripple Jobs, who is actually laughing ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK on iPod sales").

I liked the last third of the interview, when he kept talking about "when we perfect the platform"...uh....HUH? PressPlay, the online platform that Uni put together with Sony was voted one of the Top Ten Worst Tech Products of all time, for heaven sakes.

And to think, Jimmy is one of our SMART guys!

This is very tongue n' cheek, much like The Onion News and taken from the often at times hilarious ...trail of dead fan site.

Iovine Takes Blame for Trail of Dead Mistakes, Regrets
12/19/2007 -- by merlin

NEW YORK, New York (AP) -- Interscope Records supremo Jimmy Iovine has taken the unprecedented step of apologizing to music fans, critics, and the industry as a whole for the recent acrimonious break-up between his label and the band he signed himself, indie favorites ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

Iovine took time out of his normally unengaging schedule to personally deliver a statement of apology which he hopes will begin to bury the many hard feelings felt by the band's fanbase, born out of nearly seven full years of indifference, thoughtlessness, and neglect. "First and foremost I would like to apologize to the band, Trail of Dead, who went above and beyond any and every initial expectation I had for them," read Iovine. "They were one of the few bands I negotiated with myself. I signed them to a long-term contract because I always knew what they had to offer on record and on tour. Back then [in 2001] they were the future of rock 'n' roll and I still believe they can be, even if it is with a minor-league label. I'll admit we made a few small mistakes with their handling, release dates, tour planning, press, marketing, and radio promotion, but I always thought they'd break through with us eventually."

"When I received the call from their management telling me they had decided to leave I was gutted," continued a remorseful Iovine. "One hundred and ten percent. I didn't leave my Manhattan townhouse for almost a day. It affected me that much. I'm not at all an unfeeling person as some make me out to be. Of course there are many things I regret about the past few years, not least of which is how we treated their fans. They gave the band their complete and utter support and we didn't even come close to doing the same. For this, and a few other things, I am forever sorry. I wish Trail of Dead all the best in their newest endeavors and should they ever wish to come back to Interscope, I'll be more than happy to possibly consider it."

Iovine didn't answer questions following his statement, refusing to say whether he would issue an apology to Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, 50 Cent, or other present and former unsettled Interscope artists.

the whole thing reeked of desperation...what head of ANYTHING would agree to this kind of a presentation? Didn't he refer to the guy with the camera as "my friend Herb"? Too funny...was this unpolished turd an attempt at "keeping it real"?

The more I see of this, the more I wonder whether it was ever intended for public viewing.

I think it's safe to say that if he ever imagined thousands of Velvet Ropers (or whoever) would be analyzing every sentence, or that it would be widely disseminated in any form, he would have had that extra cup of coffee before starting in.

Best line..."with the older artists, you can pretty much do what you want."

I'm guessing that includes all the artists that aren't getting paid for back-catalogue.
