A letter recently received by many publicists:
To all:
Given the rising costs of paper, postage, plastic, envelopes and human effort, the economic problems faced by the music industry, the myriad ways of finding new music in the digital age, as well as all of our deep concerns for the environment, I would like to request that you remove me from any of your mailing lists that send out unsolicited CDs or press material.
D***** ********* from my office will contact you when I need something specific, and we can make arrangements for delivery at that time.
Thank you very much. Lisa Robinson Vanity Fair Magazine
Truth is, when I was keeping track of things, I very rarely received anything of use over the transom. On the other hand, you never know.
The environmental angle, though, is genius. That's why she's Lisa Robinson, and I'm not.

I guess since they started asking for identification at the used record store and are only paying off in store credits....

How were they? Could you enjoy them in binaural sound?

This is the way a lot of journalists and publicists work nowadays, Tev. Except for about 50 to 100 staple writers, who'll cover everything we service, we don't send product out unless a journalist is interested in it. Basically we send e-mails and make calls all day, asking writers, radio and tv if they're interested in a new record, and we'll service accordingly.
Neither independent bands or record companies don't have the budget to service product to people, who end up not listening to CDs.
It also makes follow ups easier.

Seems a bit ridiculous, no? That's like a radio station Music Director telling all the labels' Promotion people, "Listen, stop sending me music and working me on your new artists. I'll find it on my own. When I need free tickets or 'Presents' on one of your A-list artists' concerts, I'll call you to make arrangements."
Ya gotta play the game a LITTLE bit, right?

The thing is (unless she has a gig other than VF), she writes about so little each month that 90% of what comes out would wind up as mulch in her garden, anyway.
