Im not so worried about that, Skwerl says. Its a legal grey area since it wasnt for download, it wasnt a finished product. We arent sure who owns the recordings. I feel like I might survive this.
Well, I know for sure who doesn't own the recordings...
Idiot.

...and I was worried that the FBI was wasting it's time doing Dick Cheney's bidding! This makes me feel so much better.

I will say that the few times my property has been stolen, I couldn't get the Hollywood police even vaguely interested.
Maybe I should have called the Feds.

Chinese Democracy leaker gets FBI visit
Possibly the best publicity stunt of the year.
I've heard they're also headed out to Malibu to talk to the pap-beatin' surfers.

Exactly - all the way down to the street teamer/1st time caller (who's nickname is from the Chinese Democracy song "There Was A Time" -cute) that started this thread.
At any rate - If this type of thing warrants a visit from the FBI, Shawn Fanning would've been executed by now.

This is all Azoff. Wasn't it Rolling Stone who had all the inside info on the Van Halen tour before everyone else? And the very first photo of the new lineup? He must have someone there willing to post these bullshit fabricated stories. I still don't see the logic in leaking the nine, clearly unmixed, unmastered tracks though...

I had the same suspicions, and now am even more. Skwerl (what a name) worked for Universal Distribution, the Rolling Stone story was online almost simultaneously with the leaks being posted on Antiquiet.com, and now the FBI is on the scene to keep the story going for another newscycle--just in time for the print version of Rolling Stone ship with a story covering the events.

I'm the first one to name pretty much anything like this as a publicity stunt, and the GNR leak sure sounds like one.
But.
Would the Feds wittingly get involved in such a thing? And if they didn't know, and find out, will the whole thing blow up like an exploding cigar in Azoff's (or whoever's) face?

The other part that screams phony publicity stunt is that Axl's "Good Friend" Sebastian is suposedly doing an interview to spill the beans on how good the record is and this and that? Obviously Sebastian is friends with Axl and knows the guys an egomaniac, he would NEVER grant Rolling Stone or ANYONE an interview to discuss Axl without his permission. Get real.

Agreed, and great logic on all accounts teverett. My bet is, since this was a former Universal employee, they knew if they put the proverbial "hot potato" in his hands it would leak. On the other hand, if the Feds are investigating, and this was not orchestrated in any manner, then GN'R and Azoff were lucky in a way, and are getting priceless publicity from this. Nonetheless, one thing has now been proved, the album is at the label, as this leak came from Universal

The album may be at the label, but there is NO possible way these 9 songs are a completed product.

Azoff would never have his fingerprints near this. His mindset, that's a different question.
the first rule is, never ever let the scandal seep back to you.
there are no other rules.
as all know, if anyone is more good than lucky, Irv is.
The other part that screams phony publicity stunt is that Axl's "Good Friend" Sebastian is suposedly doing an interview to spill the beans on how good the record is and this and that? assume this is all true, and worse. then there is only one question.
WHO CARES?
it doesn't matter. the idea is to promote. bake someone a cake, if you must. but having this record dominate ANYTHING, news, blogs, retail charts, gossip columns, it's all GOOD.

This would not be Irving and certainly not Axl.
One hears that the "negotiations" are not done to provide Axl with what he wants that would enable a release. The master has been delivered but the chances of it being in the hands of someone from distribution is fair to none.
Now if Jimmy wanted to speed things along.....maybe something could accidently leak. Forcing the hand and some nice press. Just saying.

Abbe, can you clarify your statement regarding the "negotiations"...not quite sure I am interpreting it properly?
In other news, Rolling Stone is reporting tonight that Axl is penning an autobiography:

could the leaks have come from a former manager?
on self-interest basis alone, the probability of that is about 100% NOT MERK
if he has not been paid, why would he risk the backlash?
if he has been paid, why would he risk giving any of it back?
On the same basis of self-interest, there's a tone of rung bell within Abbe's insights

Maybe my mind is not working correctly due to travel and a lack of sleep, but what is Abbe getting at here (odd sentence structure is throwing me off)?:
"One hears that the "negotiations" are not done to provide Axl with what he wants that would enable a release."
To paraphrase, are you saying the negotiations are not completed yet, thus their is no release

- negotiations are still ongoing, and Axl has final approval on record going to street

Something must be brewing, as Rolling Stone has been posting about two stories a day, online, since last Thursday. How do Iovine and Azoff get along?

Huh. I gave up on this band and record seven years ago. Axl shoulda given the tracks away online to fans about five years ago after dicking fans around for 8 years anyway. If he had, he'd probably still be relevant and able to sellout stadiums somewhere besides Honduras and Guam.
