(did a search and didn't see this mentioned yet...)
Just got a bulletin from "All Over But The Shouting" scribe Jim Walsh. Seems Steve Foley passed away this past weekend. My most sincere condolences to his friends and family.
Here's the bulletin:
Steve Foley passed away over the weekend. The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago at the off-leash dog park by Lake Of The Isles. For an hour we sat in lawn chairs, watched the sun set, and talked about how much we loved watching our dogs run wild. He talked about some personal problems, but he seemed to be on the other side of them. Peaceful. That's how I'll remember him. Last year when I was writing a book on the Replacements, he was very helpful. This is part of what he told me:
I started drumming in bands in 1979. My first band was the Overtones. I played with Things That Fall Down, the Suprees, Wheelo, Routine 11, and Curt [iss A] every Wednesday for ladies night for a decade. I've been in so many bands, I'm probably forgetting some.
I was playing with Pete Lack and Jimmy Thompson in Wheelo at the time. I was with my brother Kevin and another guy, Paul Miller, on a Saturday morning, and we went to the Uptown [Bar] for brunch like every other swingin' dick in town: you'd go up there for a big old breakfast. But it was too packed, so we went over to the CC Club.
And we're sitting there, it was pretty empty, and Paul and Tommy walked in. They sat in a booth behind us, and my brother Kevin is like, "God, Steven, your ears are burnin'. They're talking about you. They keep looking over here."
So I got up and went to the bathroom, and I said, "Hey, guys. Love the new CD." And Paul's like, "Really? Wanna join the band?" I'm like, "What do you mean?" And he's like, "Well, Tommy's got his black book out and he's running back and forth to the phone, trying to find a drummer." I think he was calling Clem Burke and all these other guys. So I was like, "Fuck, yeah. Are you kidding?"
Paul said, "No. We've got a CD obviously that's just come out, and we're going on tour. We're gonna have to audition you."
So we finished the meal, got in my car, and I had just bought a copy of All Shook Down, and I just had it cranked before I went into the CC, so when they got into the car and turned on the ignition, I think it was "Bent Right Out Of Shape" just blasted out of the stereo. Perfect. It was pretty good. They both looked at each other and went, "You're already in." Compared to all these other bands who've made it I mean, these bands are a joke compared to the Replacements. I'm just glad to have been part of it. Some days I walk down the street and go, "God, I was in that fuckin' band?" Unbelievable. It is. It will always be a treasure in my mind.

rip, buddy.
too bad Steve had to enter the Mats at such a low period. there was no joy in that band by the time he was hired. he may have looked back fondly later, but within two months of starting out, he was not enjoying it.
p.s., all the bands steve mentioned were good support bands around here but Curtis Almsted was an unbelievable talent.
Curtis A & The Originals Curt and Bob Dunlap were the origiinators of Spooks and have been closely aligned for years. The Originals were short lived and have since taken on new form, The Personals. Curt was the recipient of the 1979 Connie Award for best male vocalist in the Midlands and is an irreplaceable master - an unbelievable raw instrument of sound. The Originals, like Spooks were a vehicle of rumbling power for Curt and Bob. Spooks has one Twin/Tone release, an EP which was a semi-crazed mixture of diabolical and the sublime. Curt, Bob, Reynaldo, Mark Goldstein, and Dave Ahl (The Personals) are in the studio completing an album for Twin/Tone.
Curtiss A - lead vocals, guitar R. Mook - guitar, vocals Little Stevie A - bass Eclipse M. - organ Tilly - drums

Well doesn't this suck. Way too young.
I hung with him after the last Mats show at the Beacon on the ASD tour and at a few Bash & Pop gigs a little later, super nice and cool to talk too. He had some funny stories about PW and the last show in Grant Park.
WTF happened? Anybody know? I hope it wasn't something sinister.

WTF!!?? We are out of town and just checked in to find this complete shocker. I thought for sure Kevin would check out first- don't get me wrong- I love Kevin and we've been pals with all of the Foley clan for years and years........
My SO played with Steve many times over the years and still plays with the awesome Mr A who RW mentioned above post. We are in total shock and will have to call home when I sign out of here in a few minutes. Awwwwwww we are soooo BUMMED.

Very sad. I was always a huge fan of that Bash and Pop album, and Wheelo put out one of the best power pop albums to come out of Minneapolis in the 1990s.
Word has it Steve OD'd on prescription meds.

This is very sad news for this long time Replacements/Westerberg fan.
I was lucky enough to see them with all of their lineups: Bobs last show at the Ritz NYC '86, 1st Slim tour at Ritz in '87, last Chris tour Rutgers '89 and Orpheum Boston w/ Steve in '91.
Be well now, Steve.
Hey Bob, here comes a regular.

Why...?
I was literally just thinking of him today while listening to Saint Etienne. I'm thankful for the few memories, but can't even think forward to the rest peacefully, yet. So sad.
np: 'Crying' R. Orbison 'These Days', Westerberg version

I met Steve after a Bash & Pop show at the old 9:30 Club. Couldn't have been nicer.
RIP.

In an effort to get more information out there about Steve's death I wanted to post what I know. My wife works with Steve and he has become a good friend. Steve's death was not a suicide and was accidental. He was in good spirits on Thursday and was not feeling right on Friday and went home early. When his co-workers could not contact him and found his car was still at work on Monday they went to his house to check on him and found him on the couch. He was a great person and a bright soul and will be missed. Think well of him and pray for his family. Our thoughts go out to his sister and his brother.
