As much as Metallica has disappointed me, 'Some Kind of Monster' really did expose something: they were a mess as people. You can't function as a musician worth a damn if you're fucked up in the head, and James clearly was.
i hate to point out what i consider to be the obvious...but this statement begs for correction. 90% of rock is made from poeple just like james going through shit. the only thing not normal about all of that was they put a camera in the room so everyone else could see.

you don't play a photograph on the radio but you definitely see a fine woman dancing and singing in your minds eye, post TV performance....THAT's music.....
Viz Tip #1
....the music is what you feel not what you hear or see......
If you can't hear or see, what originates these "feelings"?
Beyond that, let's look ten years down the road when Rihanna has been out of the public eye for nine years or so. Some movie soundtrack picks up "Umbrella". What now?
never said she was a GREAT singer, I don't think she's THAT bad and for sure not THAT good....I saw the same performance, I wasn't in a rush, I checked her out. It was very contrived for my taste, but properly produced pablum for certain masses of fans
you see what's fucking you up is that you have to realize, there are MASSES of people who DON'T care THAT much about MUSIC ...just well put together product they can relate to and hum, dance, and sing along with......
Pissing me off, yes. Fucking me up, no.
Junior, I played my first live gig in front of a paying crowd in 1974. At this point, I think I know a career artist when I hear one. Metallica, all opinions aside, are career artists. Rihanna, whose looks far outweigh her voice, is not. Again, end of story.

Looking at the numbers for the Metal Masters tour, you can see why nobody has dethroned Metallica.
Not even a package tour as solid as Heaven & Hell / Judas Priest / Motorhead / Testament can draw capacity crowds. How can a Lamb Of God or Testament do anything but flounder when ticket prices are as high as $125 for the best seats?
Even Testament's one-off shows did poorly since the nearby markets within a 100-mile radius didn't care.
Look the numbers below. Metal fans don't come out like they used to anymore. Really a shame...this would have played in stadiums rather than arenas and pavillions in 1989.
August 9th - PNC Bank Center (Holmdel,NJ) Capacity: 16,952 Attendance: 10,966
August 7th - Nissan Pavillion at Stone Ridge (Bristol,VA) Capacity: 22,583 Attendance: 11,137
August 6th - Susquehanna Bank Center (Camden, NJ) Capacity: 24,935 Attendance: 7,059

HORRIBLE example. MoM features bands that predate Metallica, except for Testament. Seriously, who did a bunch of 50 and 60 year old musicians think would show up beyond aging metalheads who remember the glory days of those bands?
This tour did not excite me in the least bit. I've been calling it the 'No Country for Old Men' tour since it was announced. I had zero interest. Plus, the bad word of mouth on Priest has to be getting around. I know once I heard Testament's set was 6 songs, any lingering interest on my part vanished.
Metal fans are in their 30s and 40s now. They have families and can't afford triple digit concert tix too often. Or the fans who saw those bands in the 80s just aren't into it any more. And I'm willing to bet kids listening to newer metal bands don't relate to MoM, except maybe Motorhead.
I can only speak for myself as someone in the target demo for that tour in saying I'm not interested. I'm far more stoked to see Shinedown and Nightwish in concert, maybe In Flames, and Black Stone Cherry. Now those boys have something special. Jimmy Page seems to agree.
Even Testament's one-off shows did poorly since the nearby markets within a 100-mile radius didn't care.
Again, bad example. The guys in Testament are the same age as the Metallica guys and with the exception of Skolnick, none are professional musicians. They said flat out that Testament is a 'hobby' now. A 8 year lag between albums didn't help, but Chuck had to deal with that pesky cancer thing.
Also, my interest in Testament dried up when I saw they were not playing non-Skolnick era material. If I can't hear stuff from 'The Gathering,' I am not interested.
Look the numbers below. Metal fans don't come out like they used to anymore. Really a shame...this would have played in stadiums rather than arenas and pavillions in 1989.
That's because a new generation has not been made by the industry. They don't hear it, they aren't exposed to it. Did you see that article on Michael Phelps and his omnipresent iPod? They listed the artists on it: all rappers, all of them. Why is a 23-year-old suburban white kid exercising to G Unit and Twista when there's plenty of adrenaline-pumping gee-tar rawk out there? Because that's all he's heard all his life, I reckon, between radio and MTV.
Again, I point to Buckcherry's resurrection and how they had to do it without the help of the industry influencers.
Plenty of genres die when the industry does its best to ignore them. Remember the size of those Lilith Fair crowds 10 years ago? Don't see that any more, either.

Her career is over when Jay Z gets bored with fucking her, or when Beyonce puts her foot down.
Loved the "junior" comment.
