Very strange choice on Sony's part, considering the price of these discs. They are just standard Red-Book CD's that have been recorded with a different type of laser, so the difference in sound quality will be barely noticeable, if at all. The press release from Sony was in Japanese only, if that tells you anything about this plan.

If anyone wants higher quality CD's, then they would get SACD's (also made by Sony) or DVD-A discs. At least Blu-Spec doesn't appear to be a proprietary format (where Sony has failed miserably in the past with Beta, MD, etc.), but I don't see them even being able to sell enough to cover repackaging costs.

Weren't they also responsible for the DAT and the Mini Disc Player?

They need to focus on just one thing and get THAT right.

There is no way any kind of format upgrade in the delivery of music on CDs will fly. The math just doesn't make sense.

The focus should be on delivering higher quality downloads and getting the copyright and master owners compensated. Duh.

Why can you not replicate the warmth and depth of vinyl in a CD format? Is it physically impossible?
