Creationix,

You have some good points, and next week, we'll have some interesting releases to observe:

Diana Krall (85k on previous)
Keith Urban (270k on previous)
Bow Wow (262k on previous)

Not sure if Martina has a new single, but as one of the mainstays of that industry, it seems paltry to be selling 44k or thereabouts...and yeah, the Disney franchises seem to be tanking of late...

Noticed this on Hypebot... seemed relevant to the discussion at hand.

"CD purchases declined 26% and paid digital downloads fell 13% compared with the prior year.... The downturn in paid acquisition was also matched by a downturn in the number of tracks downloaded from P2P networks which also fell 6% in 2008.

http://www.hypebot.com/hypebot/2009/04/online-listening-replacing-music-aqusition.html

This has been mentioned before, but it's worth repeating that on-demand-streaming is quickly replacing downloading. The kids are perfectly happy to stream music. They don't care about "owning" the music. Even the guys from the Pirate Bay are old-fashioned now. They are stuck in the 20th Century, where it was about owning copies of music. The kids don't care about that now.

I hope Apple & and the major labels are adapting to this trend. iTunes is already obsolete and needs to be replaced by some kind of legal on-demand-streaming. The labels would be wise to use the rising competition from Spotify (which is replacing iTunes outside of the US) as a way to get Apple to pay a decent rate per stream.

Queen,

Yes, that's very interesting stuff. With Spotify, do you tell it what you want to hear or is it just like radio where you never know what's coming?

It's play on demand. It's like Rhapsody, except it includes a free, ad-supported option and has a nice iTunes-like interface.

Well, that's cool. I see what you mean...what's the point of owning if you can play on demand? I guess one reason would be to fill your iPod up so you can go for a walk or to the gym or if you're going to be on vacation with no internet access. But given that the majors never offered the consumer a higher quality and more desirable product than the CD, there's no real reason to own, for the most part...

I'm going to assume by that "for the most part" at the end, you're aware that some people "consume" music in entirely different ways, and were perfectly content with CDs, and very much like to own product.

Oh, but the industry can't make money like that, so those people are SOL, right? Lovely.

Eephus, as a gross generalization, I'm going to assume that most of the younger generation isn't as concerned as my generation with holding a physical product. I say this because so few of the young seem to use CD's as anything other than a load-in into their computers. So, yes, the CD-buying oldsters (for the most part) are becoming SOL.

Keith Urbans #s may end up being hyped a bit because Amazon had it for $3.99 on it's first day (most likely to make the #s look better). I took a shot at that price.

Pity about Martina. Better than her previous one. I count 4 or 5 on it that are at least as good as anything she has ever done. Bought the CD.

I'm old and old school on owning. I've had hard drive crashes in the past. If I have the CD I can always rip them again. But make it cheap enough and I'll go MP3.

Rodney Atkins previous: 55k
Rodney Atkins new: 35k
Down 40%

Keith Urban previous: 270k
Keith Urban new: 177k
Down: 37%

Diana Krall previous: 85k
Diana Krall new: 101k
UP: 20%
Isn't that the way the industry is supposed to work? Where an actual artist hires great musicians, goes into a pro studio with a pro engineer, chooses great songs and actually sells MORE than before?

Flo Rida previous: 86k
Flo Rida new: 55k
Down 35%

Bow Wow previous: 261k
Bow Wow new: 28k
Down 86%

Thoughts?

Prince debuts #1 @ 185k -- he must be thrilled.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs at 17K? I'm shocked! Is there a single on the radio?
