so I go to Best Buy in a buying mood, all energized after the MTV Awards;
was there last week, looking for Eminem, it was nowhere in sight, I figured it's selling big...
go back this week,STILL no Eminem, and no Iggy anywhere...
I ask and they tell me, probably sold out, then I ask for the new Iggy...
they find me some kid who goes to the computer, tells me they won't be carrying Iggy, it's a special order;
looking over his shoulder, I point out that he's looking at a 39 dollar special edition;
he then acknowledges that Iggy is sitting in the stock room,along with Eminem, ;
he brings me one of each;
does he bring out additional copies of Ig and Em to put in the racks? NO!
no wonder brick and mortar is done; everything is in the stock room(when I managed Goody's in the 70s, the labels sent reps to the stores every week to see their product was in the racks, guess that shit is over... what a fucking joke...)

By 2010, Best Buy will be in the exact place that Borders was through 2008 and 2009. CDs are totally neglected and probably, rightfully so from a business perspective. It was a loss leader section that was initially meant to drive traffic into the stores with the hopes for higher margin impulse buys. Now it hardly drives any traffic except for the music geeks who are left with no other physical store options. Jimi, I would be surprised if you were to say that you picked up a new smartphone with accessories or a high def TV on either of your visits and that is exactly the problem for Best Buy now. They had a loss leader section that is now nothing but a complete loss for them to maintain, as it no longer drives the customer types that it use to. I am sure that if Circuit City wasn't in such an obvious spiral for the last couple of years that Best Buy would have already slashed these departments ala Borders style. If the closing of CC doesn't impact sales of CDs in some significant way this year for BB, then IMHO spring of 2010 will be the slash and burn time for CDs at Best Buy.
Jimi, I feel your frustration, but you have to see where this is going. Never mind Iggy, but when BB stores don't give a crap about having Eminem on the floor for street date, then it is over for BB. Also the fact that it took two weeks and your inquiry to even bring it to their attention that it was in the stock room, shows just how irrelevant CDs are to their average customer.
