Rhino Records Lays Off 30-40

WMG unit attempts to change with the times.

By Variety
Published: September 24, 2009

In the latest indication of the shrinking market for compact discs, Warner Music Group's catalog arm Rhino Records implemented across-the-board layoffs Thursday.

Sources estimated between 30 and 40 employees were downsized in all departments, including A&R, marketing, promotion, and publicity.

A statement from Rhino cited a "fundamental transformation of the physical new release and catalog business" as a reason for the staff cuts.

This goes down as most-fucked news of 2009 in the music biz.

Meanwhile, WMG gives deals to Perez Hilton and Spencer Pratt. And we wonder why the music biz is in the shitter?

Staff cuts are not the same as the label completely folding, but it does feel the same.

I hope the people who openly steal music and brag about it (including here on the VR) are happy how many people they've displaced.
