A case could be made that some departments -- publicity, marketing, licensing, maybe even art -- could be absorbed into the parent label's existing structure. That case would be made by accountants; I could make at lease as strong a case for having a dedicated Rhino staff in the same sense that labels have (for instance) urban and country divisions.

But A&R?

Great point Bill but let's not forget the deals they gave Ben Brewer (Edgar's son...don't know why the Bronfman name isn't good enough for Ben but he probably wants to hide his pedigree) for his piece of crap label disguised as a "green" initiative and Jamison Ernest for his "yellow fever" record label (Lyor uses this guy to pull his models and it's probably how he met his current designer girlfriend). Also give credit to the WMG shareholders who finally forced Edgar and Lyor to fire Kevin Lyles who did nothing but collect a million or more a year to sit connected to a machine that sucked the fat out of his body!

With the cash used on the previously mentioned ventures/execs you could have probably hired at least 20 more people at Rhino!

Oh well, another nail in the coffin of quality physical product!

Ummm - I'd count the New Order debacle last year as a couple of self-inflicted swings of the hammer in that area. (And I know, maybe the mastering problem was from elsewhere - so be it. It had their name on it. You claim it, you gotta take it.)

Agreeance.
Shit like that New Order debacle is what happens when you fire all the qualified people that actually know shit and end up with only clueless desk-bound execs and interns running things.

Brewer? Wouldn't a Bronfman in "disguise" at least go by Ben Distiller?

Spencer Pratt is going to save their Canadian bacon.

All but one person in A&R were laid off. At least they got that amazing Big Star box out before the ax fell.

People that have been there for almost 20 years were let go. Obviously, history and knowledge no longer matter. Something that Rhino was known for - they had experts. The best in the biz.

Of course, all the execs got to keep their jobs. Just the people who actually did the work got let go. It is absolutely tragic.

I'm guessing the problems with Rhino began after Warner Music aquired it, when it became primarily dedicated to mining the Warner Elektra Atlantic catalog, especially after they renamed the company Warner Special Markets or whatever the monicker was. Which likely meant that, to some executives at the parent company, they looked at Rhino on an organization chart and said, "Um, why don't we scale back WSM/Rhino and let Atlantic and Warner Bros. handle their own catalog exploitation"?

Too bad, because Rhino was so much more. And given the enormous wealth of undiscovered indie and local-scene gems created in the past decade, it's too bad that Rhino won't be there to sort through and anthologize those gems.

Maybe they'll concentrate their efforts on the smaller scaled Rhino Handmade sets. Those have built in audiences that don't much care for file sharing anyway.
