Now that vinyl is making a comeback, what does Technics do? They discontinue the best selling turntable of all time.
The news originated from this dealer
TECHNICS SL-1210 MK5 Direct Drive Turntable The Panasonic distributors in NZ and Australia have indicated that production of the world famous Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210 DJ turntables will stop in the very near future. We are currently waiting on an official confirmation of the situation from Panasonic Japan (the manufacturer of Technics).
Then the news spread through the blogosphere ...
11/30/09 Enjoy the Music.com Technics SL-1200 to be discontinued While perhaps not 'audiophile', those who have tried the Technics SL-1200 turntable have generally came away impressed for the money and it has been reported that sales of this legend is coming to an end.
And there are websites refuting that, but Technics doesn't say much ...
Panasonic discontinuing Technics 1200 turntables? UPDATE: Panasonic has come back to us with a statement, but it unfortunately doesn't yet say much.

Riddle me this, Andrew: if it's the "best-selling turntable of all time," and vinyl is on the upswing, and there aren't turntables available that are better-suited to today's needs...why would Panasonic discontinue it?
Maybe they'll license the patents and design to you, and you can put it on the market yourself.

the SL 1200 is indeed a legendary incredibly popular turntable, especially with the club DJ population but sadly everyone, even ME,have made the transition to CDs for dj purposes(many of these brats use their ipods to dj with, which to me, isn't really dj'ing at all, but the fact is, this one time vital DJ table just isn't vital to DJs now.. for the consumers of the 'vinyl resurgence', the SL 1200 isn't something they actually need, it's too DJ specific..

most of the 1200's in nite clubs have been there for years, badly in disrepair, that's one reason I switched to CDs; the #1 reason being the 99 cent price point at itunes; I never trusted limewire and all that, and I actually like to pay for what i own; it's highly unlikely that club owners will refurbish or replace those old 1200's

I'm not really hip on what takes place in the DJ world but how much impact did Vestax's popularity and other companies like them have on Techniques bottom line?
Not much. Vestax really went head to head with Numark.
Technics was hurt by Serrato, and the fact that DJ's realized they could use cheaper turntables with it. As long as the 1200 is alive DJ's will always think a Technic turntable automatically costs $500. That has to change ASAP.
Also, the dance Dj's all went CD/MP3 mixers.
They could still sell a lot, but not as many as necessary to justify the expense of keeping the line alive.
I expect them to lean more on cheaper versions to be used with Serrato, as well as their other format mixers.
