When I heard they put out a 55 minute song, I figured they were trying to out-prog everyone else in the genre. Leave it to The Professor to set things straight. Peart was talking about Rush putting out its own music without a label and said this:

-------------

Q. So you might start making music in smaller increments?

A.Or larger. I went to see a band called Porcupine Tree not long ago. And I was talking with (singer-guitarist) Steven Wilson. They just put out a 55-minute piece. That's a finger to the whole iTunes shuffle thing, and he intended it as such. And I thought, 'Yeah, that's another way of rebelling against it-- by just saying no.' There's too much lost in giving up the integrity of an album -- what it represents to you as a musician, and as a human being, for that matter. So I like that approach. That's very possible for a band like us. So there are no limitations; we might go big or we might go small.

------------

A lot of fans were hoping Rush would work with Wilson but Nick Raskulinecz is producing their new music again.

If that was really their intention, they could have made the 55 minute piece one track. (But it's really a concept album of seperate songs, not a single 55-minute piece).

"shuffle" is a function. iTunes is an online retailer.

The one prog band who's truly given the finger to ITunes is King Crimson, as none of their stuff is available there. On their last few albums they also broke the longer pieces into seperate tracks, making shuffle imp[ossible.

They're not on rhapsody either. Is it something more complicated? I thought they might have a bitter relationship with their label or something. Unless the idea of selling their music to fans who want to buy it is distasteful to them.

Does iTunes sell classical music tracks that are 55+ minutes?

If they sell it at iTMS, they can only charge 99 cents for a song, so they're potentially giving themselves the finger.

Don't know, probably. They sell dance albums that don't get track clearance as one long continuous mix. But it's an album purchase.

Long tracks (anything over 10 mins) are usually on ITunes as "full album only" downloads. They're selling Porcupine Tree's album as seperate tracks, with everything available individually except the 11-minute song in the middle. (But since there are 18 "songs" on the album, it's cheaper to pay $10 for the whole thing).
