@danhedonia...I've been married for 7 years now and we both watch tv and simultaneously surf. We both have laptops and we do this all the time. If I see something that interests me, I tend to want to get after it right away. It has NOTHING to do with ones attention span. It has EVERYTHING to do with ones ability to multi-task which is a huge part of my day to day job.
@popeye as far as a stand/case/cover...a nice wooden one has already been done for it.
You know you have done something right when people are hotly debating something that's not even out yet.

The LP format has a new opportunity here, to develop a product which is part music, part visual, with all lyrics, credits, liner notes, etc etc. This truly is a great opp for our industry.
You're deluded to think that people want to pay a premium for lyrics and liner notes, or things like video that they watch for free on youtube or vevo. the ipad and the LP format will not save the music biz.
you could argue that the ipad will affect publishing as the ipod affected music. but you can and should give up hyping the LP format. it should have been part and parcel bundled from the beginning.

Thank you Seijn, for piping in. As if a lot of peeps out there don't use laptops while watching TV! I wonder what planet Danny's living on?
NY and Reeves, first off, no delusion here, because it is not something I am boldly predicting (that the iPad will be any benefit whatsoever to the music biz). Having said that, I can imagine there being some delivery format, the likes of which we haven't yet seen, that will spark the interest in music lovers.
Prior to the iTMS opening up in 2003 or whenever, there were MANY who thought people would not pay for online music in that post-Napster era. As we all know, the iTunes Store has gone on to become our most major retailer of music. And yes, people ARE paying. Not enough, but it's the best start we've had in online digital retailing.
I submit to you that it's only a matter of time before we all have to start paying for content that we currently get online for free...and I'm thinking about magazines, newspapers, TV/movies, etc. (I'm sure you've seen that Hulu isn't working financially and they many have to start charging?). The iPad will most likely be the product that changes all of that, because content providers will start charging subscription fees for your USA Today, your NY Times, etc. And concurrently, they'll take down a lot of their content from their free site.
Also, consider this...right this minute, Plastic Beach (Deluxe Version) is #1 at iTunes. The "regular" version is at #7. The difference between the two seems to be 2 extra songs and 1 video. Apparently, more buyers are choosing to pay the extra $3.00 to get the deluxe version. SOOOO...what happens if the "Deluxe" version disappears and is replaced by the iPad version, which not only has the 2 extra songs and the video, but also includes all lyrics, liner notes, credits, video footage of them in the studio (puppets?), bonus links to discounted merch at their website, a Plastic Beach puzzle that gets you a $10.00 discount to their concert, etc etc etc. These are all things that would be tough to put across on an iPod. Yes, they could do this right now for computers, but like the print industry, it would be sweetened by having a new piece of hardware for which all of this was optimized with touchscreen stuff. I can see this possibility. I don't mind that neither of you can imagine this, but I could see it happening. Will it? Couldn't tell you. Could it? I think so.

It's going to be hard to charge for content, because once a story is out there, it's out there. It only takes one blogger with a subscription to post a story for it to become public property. The publishers can't monitor the entire 'net and they can't sue everybody.

Well, the same can be said for the iTunes Store. Yet, it continues to rack up sales. Not nearly enough, of course, but it does rack up some sales.
I still adhere to the belief that content will be paid in some way as everyone figures out this internet thing. There is simply no way that content for anyone can be free unless it is subsidized in some way (advertising, benefactors, etc), and it's doubtful to me that much will be subsidized. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.

My wife likes to watch netflix in bed. Which of course isn't available for the iPadas as of yet.
but completey playable on a netbook. And I thought the iphone was going to rescue the music industry.

If the iPad has WiFi, can't you access Netflix streaming off the internet, or load a DVD into the "big"computer in the other room and watch it on the iPad?
