I'm tired of this bs about any kid with garageband or protools and a mic can make his basement into a studio.

Can we get one example of a hit that was recorded that way?

Change or die?

Die is the wrong word.

Labels ARE changing, period. Well, not the majors. As smaller outfits grab some of the established acts whose contracts are expiring, watch more of them pop up in different configurations with a new cast of characters running the show. But with support of some of the old help from the labels still handling things like radio and video when needed.

I think the article is good. The accessability of recording equipment etc...does allow people to record relatively inexpensively. The same thing can be said for movies. It is not hard to make a movie today with fairly good equipment available at Best Buy, but you still need quality production and actors and writing to make a good product. These things generally require money. Same with making quality recordings of music, as such labels or something like a label is necessary as most acts do not have the resources, knowledge, skills, and connections to make high quality recordings and to effectively market them.

In the end, I think this is actually healthy. I dont know if 360 contracts will become the norm, but I expect there to be more transparency, cooperation and sharing of both the risks and rewards for acts and labels.

As for the majors - their catalogs keep them alive and relevant in some way forever.

Well, obviously he did. Have pro tools, I mean. As opposed to ProTools.

Boston was pre-digital age. Owl City = not a "hit". Arctic Monkeys -- dunno.

My point was that bloggers hype this scenario far more than it actually happens. And it goes hand-in-hand with people discussing the future of a D.I.Y. act, simply because of social media/internet. The fact remains that hit records include the services of a wide array of professionals across a multitude of disciplines.
