Yeah but for acts who want to make a living, keeping it in house is an ever easier proposition.

Making it all the more impressive from a sonic/production standpoint. (Not that that's really the issue at hand here, but still.)

I am assuming you're saying this in the sense of "not a hit all by itself". Because top 10 in 20 (or more) countries certainly indicates a hit to me.

I tend to give bands/records that made it to #1, "hit" status.

My opinion of the music being irrelevant to that opinion.

re: boston

IIRC, it was far more complicated than just the "total home recording by tom in his basement" story that most take for fact. high price studios in LA, remote truck on CBS' dollar, and much more, combined with everyone involved telling a different story in retrospect. not quite the same as a bedroom kid with garageband. \:\)

re: owl city...yes i would think being #1 on the hot 100 would be a hit by anyone's standards...but even before the label got involved he was in the high 6 figures on download sales.

Anything by Fatboy Slim after "Better Living."

Moby's better songs came out of his home.

I don't include electronica/dance into my thinking on this, as there's no live tracking (typically).

I'm not saying there's no exceptions to the rule, I just think there's far more hype and speculation about a DIY model than could ever exist in reality. Hell, most label acts can't cut through the clutter of media out there, let alone a go-it-alone artist. It creates the perception that labels and studios and managers and marketers aren't needed.

I don't subscribe to "acts that want to make a living" line from Alex upthread. The digital revolution has just lead to more struggling artists than ever before. The number of releases has ballooned in recent years, and I think the money to be made out there is spread thinner than ever.

it has flooded the market...but also...for some artists...it has created income streams they otherwise would not have realized.

but i do agree the blogs and such are over-hyped.
